It is important to create a living space that speaks to you, stimulates your mind, and brings you warmth and comfort. Entering your home should feel like receiving a warm hug from a loved one. Additionally, having a vision for what you want your space to look like and slowly curating your home to fit that vision does wonders for your mental health. If, at the end of the day, you can come back to a place you can truly call your own, that you enjoy just sitting and looking at, you can handle whatever life throws at you.
One way to feel your best in your home environment is to eliminate clutter. Having things piled up everywhere is the main cause of stress and anxiety. Take the time to organize the closet, or whatever cluttered room you might close the door on to avoid stress. If you have more than one “junk drawer”, clean those out and put your things in a designated spot. Once you declutter your space, you will feel a lot of that tension melt away, you will spend less time searching for things, and your mind will thank you.
Adding color and plants also boosts your mental health, because both impact the way your place feels when you enter the room. You can create any feeling you desire through color and plant-life. Taking care of your plants also gives you a sense of purpose and responsibility, adding structure to your daily routine.
Another great way to start feeling your best at home is to make a sacred space, or an altar.
Create a small space in your home where you can put objects that give meaning to your life (e.g. a photo of your family, a stone or treasure from a past adventure, etc.). Be sure to “pause” and look at them each day. Take a moment and breathe. Yes, really count three full, deep breaths. Do you notice any thoughts, feelings, or sensations as you remember what’s important to you? If you feel called, write these down so you can reflect on them later. Having this sacred space in your home will allow you to be more mindful and present, because you will always have something to retreat to when life gets too heavy. Soon, you will be able to fall right into the relaxed, peaceful mindset in the space you created for yourself.
