Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)
 in St. Petersburg, FL

Client Preparation Checklist

Integrative Counsel offers Ketamine-Assisted-Psychotherapy (KAP) in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical. Ketamine-Assisted-Psychotherapy (KAP) uses ketamine as an adjunct to therapy to help people confront their mental illness and have more persistent breakthroughs and prolonged improvement in symptoms. Integrative Counsel takes on the therapeutic portion of the experience, giving you the space to set intentions before you take the ketamine, and to help you work through and integrate what comes up during your dosing session. Journey Clinical’s medical team supports the medical aspects, which includes determining if you are eligible for Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, creating a treatment plan just for you, prescribing Ketamine and keeping an eye on your outcomes.

KAP Resources

  1. You will have an initial consultation with Journey Clinical, where they will go over your medical history, psychiatric history, and determine whether you are eligible for Ketamine treatment. They will also provide education on Ketamine treatment.
  2. If you are eligible for treatment, Journey Clinical will create a treatment plan and create a ketamine prescription just for you.
  3. Journey Clinical will send the ketamine directly to you, typically enough for your first two sessions and in lozenge form. Before your session, you will be educated on how to take the ketamine and how to take your own vitals.
  4. Before you get your Ketamine lozenges, you will schedule your sessions with Integrative Counsel. Before your dosing session, there will be initial therapy sessions to help you prepare for your dosing session. Here, you will set your intentions for what you want to get out of your dosing session.
  5. Next, you will schedule your dosing session. During the dosing session, you will self-administer your ketamine in the office, or, if virtual, at home. The Ketamine effect lasts for approximately 45 minutes, and it will be mostly an internal process. Your therapist will be there to support you if anything comes up.
  6. After your dosing session, you will have follow-up sessions with your therapist, also known as “Integration sessions.” Here, you will go over everything that came up during your dosing session and process it. You will also make preparations and set your intentions for your next dosing session.
  7. Depending on your treatment plan, you will also have regular follow-up appointments with the Journey Clinical medical team for ketamine refill prescriptions and to keep track of the effects of the treatment.

Ketamine is a legal, safe, and effective medicine used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Ketamine has rapidly-acting antidepressant and mood-enhancing effects, which can begin to take effect within 1-2 hrs. after treatment and last for up to 2 weeks. It works by blocking the brain’s NMDA receptors as well as by stimulating AMPA receptors, which are thought to help form new synaptic connections and boost neural circuits that regulate stress and mood. Ketamine has also been shown to enhance overall neuroplasticity for lasting symptom improvement.

The effects of ketamine, which most patients find pleasant, last for approximately 45 minutes. These effects can make you feel “far from” your body, and facilitate shifts in perception that can often feel expansive in nature. Your motor and verbal abilities will be reduced, so you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position during the experience. Once these effects subsided, we’ll spend the remainder of our appointment giving you space to process and discuss your experience. While it may feel hard to articulate what happened during the experience, patients feel like the insights gained are nonetheless clear. Studies have shown that the benefits to mood and neurological growth can last up to two weeks after the Ketamine experience.
