Welcome to the heartbeat of Integrative Counsel, our blog where tranquility meets transformation. This is your sanctuary for insights and wisdom on nurturing a harmonious connection between mind, body, and spirit.
Therapy can have a prominent role in our lives. It helps us navigate deep-seated issues, which can take up a lot of mental space. This can be positive when it leads to valuable insights outside of sessions. On the flip side, it might also bring up anxiety or fear about the therapy process itself.
Maybe you’re thinking about seeing a therapist for the first time. Maybe you’ve already booked an appointment. Perhaps you’ve seen a therapist in the past and weren’t happy with your results. Whatever the reason, you find yourself fearing the prospect of therapy.
“Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.” Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist
Whether our prior experiences with therapy are positive, negative, or non-existent, it’s perfectly normal to feel afraid beforehand. Therapy is hard work, meeting with a new therapist can be nerve-wracking, and our past experiences can leave us afraid of future ones.
Therapy can involve unpacking our most uncomfortable thoughts, feelings, and assumptions, so many clients can find themselves in a situation where they dread going to therapy, even if they have a great therapist that they otherwise trust. It’s normal to feel afraid sometimes, but it’s also something worth exploring for your own sake. Ask yourself the following questions:
“Bran thought about it. Can a man still be brave if he’s afraid? ‘That is the only time a man can be brave,’ his father told him.” George R. R. Martin, Game of Thrones
“Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” Helen Keller
