When you account for all the expenses, effort, and diligence required, going to therapy can seem like quite the herculean effort. Hercules, with all his strength, didn’t have to do it alone, and neither do you. Your journey was never meant to be traveled alone. It can be tempting to think that you don’t need extra support and that it won’t be worth it. You might feel embarrassed, or desire your own independence. Don’t let individualism demotivate you. Sharing the parts of yourself that you would rather keep hidden will heal you from the inside out.
There are some problems you can’t face alone. Without the right guide, it can be all too easy to be oblivious of one’s own faults. We are humans, and we all have blind-spots. Seeing a therapist will help you check your blind-spots. They can hold the lamp for you and shed light on what you don’t or can’t see because you’re too close to the situation. They can help you become more like the dragonfly, who can see in all directions at the same time, viewing the world through their heightened perspective.
A well-developed toolkit can be a source of support during difficult times. Even when you have a solid toolbox, you might still need a therapist to help you sort through that beautiful brain of yours. Your ego is a trickster, and will try to come in through the backdoor and get you ruminating on negativity. With the help of a therapist, you will be able to see more clearly which thoughts you can keep and which you should discard.
A troubled past can cast a heavy shadow onto your future if you don’t have the tools to face it. Letting the past rule your life by avoiding the valuable lessons you can learn from it will only keep you stuck in a life of inauthenticity. Therapy can help you put together a repertoire of coping skills so you can step out of the shadow of your past, and live calmly in the present moment.
With the perspective gained from therapy, you can appraise yourself more honestly, and be the deserving representative for your highest self. In order to be the best version of yourself, you must be able to go inward, listen to your authentic self, and reclaim your inner strength. It takes work, but anything worthwhile does.
When we’re under the haze of our mental illness, a great number of things may feel entirely unrealistic or beyond your reach. This is not a fact, this is a symptom. With the clarity earned in therapy, you can illuminate your own potential and become your best self. You are more powerful than you give yourself credit for. That doesn’t mean all your problems will go away and that life will suddenly be perfect, but you’ll be able to gently correct yourself and move forward rather than drowning yourself in guilt and negativity.
