Your Journey: A New Opportunity

We’re all the heroes of our own stories, but the heroes we admire in literature and on the screen find themselves undergoing spiritual and emotional transformations more often than they find themselves using the bathroom. If all of us are heroes, each going on a continuous, limitless, and recursive journey throughout the stages of our lives, then where are you in your journey? How does it relate to your current struggles? What lessons are here for you to learn?

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

-Winston Churchill

If you’re endeavoring to better yourself, you will eventually find yourself upon the threshold of success. I’m sure that doesn’t sound like an issue to some of you, but I can assure you, it is a tremendously daunting and wonderful problem to have. Change is inherently nerve-wracking, and even a seemingly positive change can be a struggle to wrap your head around.

An opportunity, by its very nature, is an upset to stability.

Opportunities are the footholds through which we ascend to greater heights, so naturally they can be upsetting to our routines and lifestyles. In fact, an opportunity can arise with such suddenness and severity that it appears to be nothing more than another obstacle sapping away at your effort and time. Many a traveler has been stopped in their tracks by an opportunity they mistook for an obstacle.

The fear of failure can be daunting, and it can be challenging to hear the call of the unknown over the persistent nagging of doubt. But to pursue an opportunity, oftentimes we have to assume a certain amount of risk. We may be given many opportunities throughout our lives, but it’s up to us to seize them.

Perhaps the hardest part about encountering an opportunity is that it’s necessary to take advantage of your moment, and not begrudge it for its challenges.

The obstacles we encounter throughout our journey are themselves valuable opportunities to use our coping skills, and figure out which tools are right for which situations. The fortunate truth is that with the right tools and the right attitude, many obstacles can be fashioned into opportunities.

Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.

-Seneca
