When things are going well, it’s easy enough to stay optimistic, but when there’s resistance, it can feel like you’re treading water. We didn’t choose to have these challenges, but we do have control over how we rise to them.

Maiden: Conceiving A Child 

When you’re trying to conceive, it can be a real roller coaster ride of emotions. Society treats child-bearing as something so simple that it could happen by accident, and many of us spent the zenith of our youth anxious about the prospect of getting pregnant. When it’s been three months or more of trying with no apparent results, the burnout is very real and it can impact your relationships, self-esteem, and even your sense of hope. So what can be done to make this process less excruciating?

• Befriending Your Body.  When your body doesn’t cooperate, it can feel like a natural assumption to make that since our body is a tool, and it isn’t working, that it must be broken. In actuality, our bodies do not like being treated like tools. Treat your body like a friend. Be patient with your body, and even in failure, speak to yourself as you would talk to a friend.

Mother: Taking Care Of Everyone

It is a time-honored tradition for mothers to over give, and over sacrifice. So in your mother phase, it is vital to take care of not only your family, but yourself as well.

• Acknowledge Your Pain. Postpartum depression is real, and too many mothers suffer guiltily in silence. Motherhood contains multitudes; in motherhood we can find the entire spectrum of human experience, from the white-hot spotlight of unbridled joy to the unplumbed gutters of unmitigated despair. In acknowledging the pain and challenges of motherhood, you can grow to recognize the heroism and courage that you embody both for yourself, and for your children.

• Embracing The Divine Feminine. When women step into their power, they are capable of accomplishing anything, and you are no different. There are as many expressions and incarnations of the divine feminine as there are women on this earth. By embracing the divine feminine within, you can approach the challenges of motherhood with confidence and enthusiasm. 

• Making Time For Therapy. Taking care of a family is hard work. Harder than being the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, and it’s got significantly less comprehensive benefits. In the hustle of motherhood, it’s easy to let yourself fall to the wayside. One simple trick for giving yourself the care you deserve is booking an appointment with a therapist.

Wild Woman: Embracing Menopause

In maidenhood and motherhood, many women spend their lives devoted to the service of others. This is the other side of the coin so to speak. In menopause, your life has an opportunity to no longer be fully entangled in your family. Embracing your wild woman phase means returning to the things that bring you joy, and finding confidence in a life well lived. 

• Healing The Mother Relationship. As we age, and inevitably become perilously similar to the people who raised us, it becomes more and more vital to heal our relationship with our own mother. In acknowledging the full scope of our often complicated relationships to our parents, we can come to a place of understanding and forgiveness for ourselves.
