Without the right mindset, it’s hard to make any sort of progress in our therapy journey. Even if we do all the worksheets, attend all the therapy sessions, and soak up all the sunshine in St. Petersburg, we’ll still need to authentically put it into practice every day. The right counselor can make a huge difference, but to unlock our highest potential, we need to become the right patient.
The secret to making meaningful changes to our mindset is changing our behavior, but changing your behavior without guidelines is complicated to understand and difficult to execute. So how do we give ourselves the tools to meaningfully change our everyday behavior?

Acting differently is far more complicated than just deciding you don’t want to be that way anymore. Human beings act out of habit more than anything else, so to change our behavior, we need to change the things we do and think about each day.
How can we start?
When we’re caught in a mess of unhealthy habits, the prospect of change can feel like a fantasy, or even a nightmare. When we’re in the habit of doing things one way, we might never consider the possibility that we are doing something wrong. As the old adage goes: When you’re a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
Working with a therapist is one of the most powerful tools we have when it comes to breaking the cycle. The right counselor can help us spot our blindspots and find a new way of seeing and doing that serves us rather than holding us back.
When life feels overwhelming, rituals can act as anchor points throughout the day. Over time, your brain begins to associate your rituals with stability and safety.
