Welcome to the heartbeat of Integrative Counsel, our blog where tranquility meets transformation. This is your sanctuary for insights and wisdom on nurturing a harmonious connection between mind, body, and spirit.

Change can look like a shiny new job, an exciting new relationship, or a fascinating new diagnosis that explains many of the symptoms you’ve been worried about for the past few months. The point is, whether it’s good or bad, navigating change can be an intense psychological experience.
That’s why coping with change is so necessary. When we simply acknowledge the pain, uncertainty, and anxiety that comes along with big transitions, we can start to live with them in a more comfortable way. After all, change goes far beyond the experience of joy decaying into suffering. When we accept change, we can start to appreciate change in all its power, promise, and pathos.
Quinn Smalley, LMHC is a counselor in St. Petersburg, FL who helps her clients find their balance during big life transitions. What she has to offer is invaluable for someone who feels out of place after a big change in their life, and that’s honest, qualified support. This is what she has to offer for you as you navigate your next big transition.
“Like seasonal changes, our lives have periods marked by different feelings, relationships, spiritual awareness, jobs, and more. Sometimes, it is not our own doing, but someone else’s doing, and that causes a major shift in our life. Change frightens many people because our modern society is grounded in structure, promptness, certainty, and security. Many individuals who struggle with anxiety struggle to breathe in, create space, and invite change. This creates a fear based response that can show up physically, emotionally, and mentally. Change is inevitable and part of growing as a person. In fact, facing discomfort and newness head on reduces anxiety in the long-run.” – Quinn Smalley, LMHC.
Some ways that Quinn recommends working through a major change include:
Anxiety treatment doesn’t eliminate your anxiety entirely. It just helps you relate to your anxieties in a more manageable way. Through therapy, you can learn to understand where your anxiety comes from, how it shows up in your thoughts and body, and what helps you feel more grounded when it arises.
As Pema Chödrön reminds us:
“Letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all. When there’s a big disappointment, we don’t know if that’s the end of the story. It may just be the beginning of a great adventure. Life is like that. We don’t know anything. We call something bad; we call it good. But really we just don’t know.”
Big changes—like starting a new school, going through a breakup, or losing a job—can shake your sense of stability in ways that are hard to anticipate. If you’re considering starting therapy at Integrative Counsel, one of the first questions that often comes up is whether therapy is accessible and affordable during an already uncertain time. Navigating insurance and payment options can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already coping with so much change. Here’s what you need to know about accessing therapy, understanding your benefits, and finding support that meets you where you are.
No matter what kind of transition you’re facing—or who your considered insurance provider is—we’re here to help you explore your therapy options. When you book an intake appointment, we’ll work with you to match you with a therapist who understands life transitions and fits both your emotional needs and your budget. That might include using insurance benefits, exploring sliding-scale options, utilizing a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement, or helping you find a trusted provider outside our practice. At Integrative Counsel, our priority is helping you access care during moments of change—with clarity, compassion, and flexibility.
If you’re covered by Aetna, you may be eligible for therapy services that support you through major transitions. Our therapists work within your insurance benefits to help you process uncertainty, rebuild stability, and move forward with intention.
Finding a therapist who accepts Cigna doesn’t have to add stress to an already challenging season. Whether you’re adjusting to a new chapter or grieving the end of one, we’ll help connect you with a right-fit therapist whose services are covered by your plan.
If you’re insured through Optum plans such as Oscar, Oxford, or United, we can help match you with a therapist who’s covered by your insurance and experienced in supporting clients through big life changes. Therapy can offer steadiness and perspective when everything else feels in flux—and we’ll help make that support accessible.
If you are looking for an affordable therapy option, but don’t have insurance, you can work with one of our counseling interns for only $55. With this option, you get the affordable rate with a counselor who is being closely supervised by a licensed therapist for the highest quality of care. Mandi and Alli are counseling interns at Integrative Counsel who are passionate about helping individuals move through big life transitions. The best part of working with a counseling intern on our team is the fresh knowledge that they bring and a passion for research and connecting with others.
“As a therapist, I have seen clients discover strengths in seasons they once feared. One activity in particular you might try is something called a road drawing.
Draw a road going from anywhere to anywhere. You might find that your road drawing has insights about where you’re going in life, what your hurdles are, and how you see your ability to get there. Working with an art therapist can be a really interesting way to explore a drawing like this as they are trained in symbolism and psychoanalysis in order to help you build insight.
If drawing isn’t your thing, try drawing a circle of control. Identify what is in this circle of control and then what is outside of your control. When we shift our focus to what we can control, change becomes less about fear and more about growth.
Remember, change doesn’t erase or ruin anything; it reveals who we truly are! And who we can become.” – Quinn Smalley, LMHC
Going through a major change or life transition can be overwhelming and lonely. You may feel vulnerable reaching out for help, and at the same time, going at it alone can be difficult. Working with a therapist can help you process the heavy emotions that naturally accompany change and become more comfortable with the uncomfortable. You will learn to widen your window of tolerance by building a solid relationship with yourself and your routine, and learn coping skills to use when unexpected challenges get thrown your way. In addition to that, one of the most healing parts of therapy is the relationship that you build with your therapist.
Reach out to us today to book a free fifteen minute consultation to get matched up with a right fit therapist. If it’s not a good fit with anyone on our team, we will connect you with a therapist who can help you.
If individual therapy is not for you, join our virtual support group, Facing The Unknown: A Journey Through Transitions.
